I used to be a person who lacked confidence. Even now I have my off days. There are many reasons for this, and if you’re truly lacking in confidence you may find that you have a lot of work to do. But if you want to boost your confidence quickly, there are ways to fast-track your way to being the most relaxed and assured person in the room.
The Invisibility Cloak
I’m not a fan of Harry Potter, but we all have to admit that the cloak he wears to make himself invisible is one of the coolest things ever.
Science hasn’t brought us an Invisibiity Cloak yet (although it has created invisibility) so until then, we have to wear one of our own making. Seriously.
If you find yourself in a social situation or on a call where you feel nervous and lacking in confidence, it is time to don that cloak. Inagine putting on a cloak that makes the real you invisible. It’s fun, right? You can pretend that your real self is invisible.
Then pretend that the cloak allows you to be someone else. Your real self cannot be seen, but your cloak allows you to be someone else for that social situation, or that call. There’s nothing wrong with this, because we all play different ‘roles’ throughout our day. We might be a parent for two hours, and an office worker for six. We could be an obedient worker for part of the day, and an epic gamer with legions of fans at night. Different roles.
Just wear the cloak that turns you into a confident, assured person.
Get the posture right
Posture has a hell of a lot to do with confidence. Stand with your back straight and your head up high. You’ll not only look like you’re confident, you’ll actually feel confident.
Amy Cuddy talked about the ‘Power Pose’. Standing like this literally makes you feel more confident. Watch the video and then try it for yourself.
Whenever you are facing a situation where you would normally feel that you lack confidence, just prepare. This is why athletes practice. They know that running through exactly what they will do, thousands of times over, is the very best way to make sure that they will achieve on the big day.
Prepare as much as you can for whatever you are facing and you will feel more confident when you step in the room.
